Why Is My Diesel Antigel Frozen? The Chemistry of Diesel Antigels
Its 25 degrees below and my PFS Antigel is GELLED. What’s up with that?!
Great question! The answer might surprise you, so stay tuned. Diesel antigels create a chemical reaction in your fuel and because chemistry does not always make sense this is one of the results. Like pure antifreeze without water will freeze at about 11 degrees and pure water will freeze at 32 degrees F, if you mix them 50/50, they will not freeze to almost 50 below. This is a chemical reaction.
Antigels—when they are concentrated—always gel. This is actually a good way to tell a good antigel from a poor one. If an antigel claims to be concentrated but doesn’t gel when it gets cold you might want to reconsider or read the fine print. Many products that claim to be concentrated and stay liquid will usually state that when the temps drop you will need to double, triple or even add as much as 5 times the recommended about. That is why they don’t gel, they really are not as concentrated as they say, but in typical marketing fashion they appear to be cheap to use but really are not.
